Journalism Department

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, was established in 1985 as a diploma awarding institution. Following four years since the department’s establishment it was elevated to the postgraduate level in 1988. Attributed to a highly qualified faculty, the department has proudly produced a large number of dynamic and competent graduates mostly engaged with widely-read Urdu, English and Pashto newspapers, radio, television, the information department and other media organizations.

Owing to the versatile curriculum offered by the department ranging from the field of mass communication, community journalism, research methods, electronic and print media to advertising and public relations, and cyber journalism, the students are equipped with the right set of skills and knowledge to get well oriented with the practical side of Journalism.

At present, the department is handling public relations services for the University of Peshawar and is anticipating upon managing publicity campaigns for other prominent institutions in the near future. Furthermore, the department is home to a Media Training and Research Center (MTRC) aimed at conducting researches based upon media related issues, carrying out public opinion surveys, and also arranging seminars and workshops.

The department also has an in-house “Campus Radio Station (FM 107.4)” that airs different programs covering a variety of topics from the academia to developmental stories from the regions of FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The broadcast is heard even the far flung areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA.

Simultaneously, launched in 2010 in collaboration with FATA Development Programme, the department also offers the IPR three months certification course on Development Journalism. Ever since its commencement, the IPR certification course has been able to equip graduates of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as media journalists with the necessary tools to further refine their journalistic skills.
